From soulful demur to honest simplicity to bluesy growling, the music of Katie & Doc will take you just about any place you want to be across the human spectrum. Their music is centered with insightfully written original songs and seasoned with covers from many musical genres. Indeed, their covers include tunes from the early 20th century, through the wooden folk of the 60’s and classic rock of the 70’s, to the alternative country & folk sounds of today’s world. They even throw in some bluegrass and gospel now and again!
Katie’s voice has been compared to the clarity of Carol King rubbed down with the 60 grit sandpaper of Janis Joplin. Her interpretation of cover songs goes beyond simple resuscitation; she resurrects songs to new life. And her thoughtful vocals lift Doc’s original numbers off the page and transforms what are simply “good ideas” into great songs.
Speaking of Doc’s tunes: Someone once described Doc’s original lyrics/songs in this manner: “If you took John Prine, Billie Holiday, Jimmy Buffet, Leon Redbone, Mahalia Jackson, David Bromberg, John Dawson Read, and Jesus, and then ground them up, altogether in a blender, it would really tick Doc off, and he’d write a song about how you should properly care for your blender. Such it is with Doc’s music; just when you think you have it objectively well-described, he changes the objective.”
Most importantly, watching Katie & Doc’s dynamic chemistry and mutual enjoyment of the craft of making music on stage is just flat out fun. And as Doc says, “If it’s not fun – – might as well stay home.”
